Modesty for Men

Modesty is usually addressed a lot when concerning women. So, I'd like to talk with you today about men in modesty. Modesty is a heart issue and the same is true with men. If you are a male or women who has one in her life, you want to ask yourself  "Am I honoring God with the way I presents myself?"  Sometimes, a man may not feel certain clothing are immodest. The lines can be blurred, especially around your own yard or neighborhood. This one question can help you decide if you are honoring God with your clothing choice.

Here in my home we address modesty for men as well as women. I have a ten year old son who is growing up fast and a husband who is very concerned about honoring God with his life. We have even more items that are not listed but specific to our family and your list may be longer because some things are very specific to each family and their walk with Christ. You just have to come together and pray for guidance to find what modesty means for the boys/men family. So here is a list of items my husband and I feel don't show modesty of the heart or glorify Jesus.

1. ripped shirts...
Anything that reveals the too much of your body can be seen as sexual. Whether by style or accident, these shirts say immodest to the world. Instead wear a t shirt that is free from tears to cover up your body.

2. excessive jewelry...
It looks flashy and extravagant. You want God to have the glory, not all of your jewels. Not that you can't wear jewelry, just in moderation.

3.shirtless outside the home...
Doing yard work, playing ball,  working on the car, jogging around the block, are usually times when men feel comfortable going shirtless. It is not a good idea for the neighborhood to see your body on display. So grab an old faded shirt for the job.

4.shirtless while swimming...
May seem harmless, but a man dripping wet half dressed is enticing to some. Get t shirts that match your trunks just for swimming.

5. speedo swim trunks...
It is like wearing underwear out in public. All of your legs, hips and thighs are showing. Plus the groin is showcased with such little fabric. Instead reach for swim trunks and a top.

6. muscle shirts...
Your physique is best kept for your wife. Even though you're not revealing skin, you are still revealing the shape of your body and can be distracting and cause lust. Loose tops or fitted within reason are a great way to keep unwanted attention from your body.

7. tight pants...
Obviously highlights the groin area. Jeans that are a looser cut will do fine to keep you from being on display.

8. shorts that show the thighs...
Shorts are harmless, but showing too much thigh can get you in trouble. Thighs are a weakness for many people and can cause unwanted lust. Shorts to the knee or just above will help you look modest.

9. sleeveless tops that are cut down the sides...
Can be fine, if worn in your home. But any other situation can cause unwanted attention. The sides of your chest, abs and stomach are seen by all and should be just for your wife. If you know you will be in and out, try a tank underneath to cover sides effectively.

10. sheer tops...
It's as if you have no top on at all. Very revealing tops cause people to stare and lust. There's a big difference in wanting chic clothes and sexually revealing ones. A shirt layered underneath or vest can help cover your body.

11. vulgar or sexual phrases on clothing...
These are just offensive and are not good judgement when you are a christian man. If some are left from the "old days", then the new you needs new tees for where you are now.

12. sinful ads clothing (alcohol, bars, drugs, etc...)
Men with morals should not want be a walking advertisement for sinful products. If you don't participate in the brand or activity, you are sending the message that you do. A free tee costs too much when you pay for it with your soul.

13. pants that are low to show underwear...
Not only is it unattractive, but it shows the public your underwear which should be private. There's a reason it is called underwear. Get pants that are your size and a belt worn on the waist would help.

14. low cut tops that show too much chest...
Shirts unbuttoned too low reveal chest and can be seen by others is immodest. Button it up or layer if this is your style.

15.tank tops...
These should be worn under clothes or in the privacy of your home. They are usually form fitted and low cut on the chest, plus the sides of the pecs can be seen.

DIY cover cami

I own a few shirts that are too low cut that I only wear with a pin or tank. The pins ruin my tops and tanks can get a little bulky. I wanted to try doing some layering without the bulky tank underneath or leaving pin holes in my shirts. When I saw cami secrets, I thought it was an awesome idea! I just had to have more options though, so I gave it a shot. Using stuff I already owned, I got to work. You know free is so me!!

fabric and lace

cut to size

fabric glue to save time

velcro to hold in place around the straps

all done with no bulk!!

then I went for another color with ribbon trim...
DIY shirt

and a more chic look...

The best part about this was of course it was free!! Plus you can play with the design with prints, trim and colors to suit your closet. I love the fact that you can use any old fabric. The second one was made using an old sleeve from a top I refashioned. The third was made using a top that was torn.

Your husband, Your stylist

I love watching shows like, "How Do I Look and What Not To Wear". I often take some of the fashion advice from those shows that are more modest. But one thing I didn't know was that I had my very own God appointed personal stylist right here in my own home!!

One day the spirit laid it on my heart to actually ask, yes ask my husband what he thought of what I was wearing. He said the usual, "You look great in whatever you wear Sweetheart!" But I pressed him a little more. Finally he sat up and smiled, actually shocked that I wanted him to critique my outfit. He did so and to my surprise it was more dressier than what I would wear. My husband wanted me to look more chic and less frumpy. I took him shopping with me on occasion and he picked outfits with more colors and sass than I would have. I love the way I look and feel in what he chooses and he has stopped me from making several fashion mistakes.

It came as a big surprise to me that my husband views on what looks good and mine were different. Not that I looked horrible, just that I didn't take into consideration what he thought looks good on me. I figured that he's a man, he really doesn't care as long as I looked presentable. So, there I was, dressing to what was comfortable to me. That was a few years back and since then I no longer seek approval of what trends are in or what my girlfriends think looks good on me. I'm only interested in having "one" man love the way I look and that is my husband, Michael.

We even had a talk about modesty. I always assumed that he didn't want anything showing. He let me know that from breast to knees were what he wanted covered. Sleeveless wasn't a big deal for him, or off the shoulder, as long as no cleavage was exposed. Skirts and dresses were fine but, he preferred jeans. I was soo surprised because long skirts to the floor and long sleeves was what "I" felt was modest.

Now I often include him and ask his opinion on how I look. It's like having my own personal stylist and the best part is, he works for free!! Another great perk, I don't have to guess if my husband will love it! I know he will because he gave his seal of approval before he sees the finished look. I don't take him shopping every single time and I don't have to wait until he gets home just to get dressed. I just include his favorite choices and try to keep what he loves to see me wearing in mind when I shop.

I challenge wives to include your husband in your wardrobe selection. You may have two very, different ideas as to what is modest or what he finds appealing. After all, we do want to look attractive for our husbands. The benefits are that you know that he will love it, instead of relying on the sales clerk saying he will. God has put him as the head and anything he chooses as a man of God will reflect in his decision to also please Christ, and he will always put your best foot forward in comfort and in style!

Head Coverings Ideas

Women choices for covering are as different as the coverings they wear. I don't cover often, but I have been interested in options that are available. I compiled a list of a few inexpensive choices, but there are endless possibilities not listed. If you are interested in learning different ways of covering, this is just a basic guide to the different affordable styles. You don't have to spend a ton of money to wear hair coverings and
I love that they can be dressed up with all sorts of embellishments
such as bows, flowers, barrets, ribbons, hair pins, etc....

 1. bandannas=These are very simple and can be found almost anywhere! From hair stores, to Dept stores and even dollar stores. They usually run from  $.50-1.99. They come in a variety of colors and styles! This is my fav for cleaning!

2. scarves= These are another way to cover, but with  more variety. They are made by most designers and are sold anywhere clothing is sold, even thrift stores and garage sales. The fabrics, colors and prints are so versatile, you are sure to find something you love!

3. snoods=One the few occasions that I do cover other than cleaning, I absolutely love snoods! They are so comfortable and come in several types of fabrics, chenille, wool, cotton, velvet, even lace etc... They can usually be found in hair stores or order them online. I found my two at a thrift store for $1 each!!

4. tichels=Are scarves that are worn with either simple ties in back or elaborate ties such as the example below. They are a very beautiful and unique way to cover and can be found anywhere scarves are sold. What's even better is they can be fashioned from old fabric!

5. chaponnes=Hats that are great for winter and summer months. They come in a wide range of materials   and colors to choose from.  Hats are sold everywhere, so they are readily available!

6. berets=A name that comes from a word meaning "cap," It is a brimless, loose-fitting hat, usually made of hand-knitted or felted wool. I personally love this style of hat covering because it looks so elegant!

7. hair nets=These are super simple and can make your hair look beautiful! Can be worn over hair placed in a bun or over entire back of hair. They can be purchased in bulk for convenience and come in various colors.

8. veils=Can be made with any type of fabric. They are simply fabric that cover and can be handmade as well. Lace veils are can be worn for more formal occasions for women who cover. Scrap fabric is perfect for this!

9. headbands=Are just that, bands worn over your hair and can serve as coverings for some women. Like all the other choices, these can have a variety of style to suit your taste.

10. turbans=Can be created by wrapping a long piece of cloth around the hair or small hat. Can be handmade with extra fabric. I've actually seen these in  Family Dollar stores lately for $1.
